I decided to put together a blog all about Chess-Boxing. The moment I first saw this amazing new sport I was instantly hooked. A friend of mine introduced me to this fascinating sport. He had downloaded this video and wanted me to watch it. I have always been a huge fan of boxing and I absolutely love to play chess. I at first thought he was kidding or that he was going to show me some viral video that a bunch of college kids who were drunk and bored one day and came up with this idea. Then he told me it was a video that was put together by former ABC News Correspondent Mike Lee and that it was actually a major event.

So we sat down with a 12 pack and some snacks and I took in this spectacle. This really wasn’t some joke it was utterly amazing. If you are a fan of chess and boxing, heck even if you only like one of the two, you will be instantly hooked. If you love boxing but hate chess or hate chess but love boxing.. you will be hooked.  This is a fast growing sport. They are even talking about it being an Olympic Sport, that would be pretty interesting.

OK, so here are the rules of Chess-Boxing

  • There are 11 alternating rounds of boxing and chess
  • Each round of boxing is 3 minutes
  • Total time limit per chess player is 12 Minutes. You are basically playing speed chess

In Conclusion

I cannot recommend this new sport enough. Chess boxing is growing at an alarming rate. There is even a governing body that sanctions these events called the
World Chess Boxing Organisation
(WCBO). No kidding. The Wu-Tang Clan even wrote a song called “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’” on their first album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993). Wu-Tang Clan producer RZA is a huge fan as well as an advocate of Chess- Boxing.  I think Mike Lees Chess Boxing series is a great introduction to this new sport. And they are surprisingly cheap. But don’t let the pricing full you, they don’t feel cheap. Hours of entertainment. Gather your friends, pick up a 12 pack and catch the growing wave of Chess-Boxing… you will be glad you did.
